Vision is often confused with mission so let me quickly explain. Mission is "What is my business and why does it exist". Vision is "Where do I see my business going".

A great definition of vision is "An ideal, unique image of the future for the common good". Mission is present based and can be external and internal. Vision is future based and is meant to give meaning and direction to the employees of the company.

Here are 6 self reflective questions to ask yourself to do a gut check of where you might really stand with your articulation of vision:

Do I talk about future trends that will influence how our work gets done?
Do I describe a compelling image of what our future looks like?
Do I appeal to others to share an exciting dream of the future?
Do I show others how their long-term interests can be realized by enlisting in a common vision?
Do I paint the "big picture" of what we aspire to accomplish?
Do I speak with genuine conviction about the higher meaning and purpose of our work?

Many leaders think they are leading with vision but, in truth, are not executing any vision.
