First, let me say that the question: Are leaders born or made, is an age old question; and there is not just a simple answer. Leadership is behavioral and behaviors are influenced both by genes (personality and intellect) and by environment (nurture, coaching, training etc).

In their time tested work, The Leadership Challenge, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner have identified 5 Practices that exemplary leaders exhibit. These practices include:

Model The Way
Inspire a Shared Vision
Challenge the Process
Enable Others to Act
Encourage the Heart

Within each of these practices there are 6 key behaviors. These 30 behaviors can absolutely be learned and actively practiced by people who CHOOSE to execute them. When executed, leaders achieve greater accomplishments and their ability to lead is positively influenced.

It has been estimated that well-crafted training and coaching boost critical leadership competencies by about 20%–30%. Imagine the great results in increased employee engagement, retention and bottom line profit could be realized if your team of leaders raised their leadership competencies by 20%.

Leaders can be made. Just like musicians master their art, leaders can master the art of effective leadership.

Please feel free to email me for a copy of the 30 behaviors developed by Kouzes and Posner that (if trained, coached, and practiced) will produce increased results for your company no matter what size or business you engage in.
